The Munthe House

Munthehuset (the Munthe House) is the name of the old main building at the Ytre Kroken Farm in Luster.
From here you have a southward view towards Ornes and the famous Urnes Stave Church, merely a 10-minute drive away.

Ytre Kroken has an interesting history dating back hundreds of years. Major burial sites dating to 400 a.d. witness to the concentration of economic power here in the late Iron Age. In 1764, the officer family Munthe came to the farm, and soon it became a popular centre for young Norwegian artists. The likes of Johannes Flintoe, J. C. Dahl, Adolph Tidemand and Thomas Fearnley came to Kroken in order to work. The magnificent nature was the attraction. For extended periods of time, the Munthe-huset also served as a school of domestic science.

The Munthehuset has now been restored and is open for group booking, and is able to offer both meals and accommodation.
